LUMECCA IPL
If you suffer from redness (rosacea), sun damage, freckles, brown age spots or vascular lesions (spider veins), then Lumecca is the perfect treatment for you.
about Lumecca treatment
Lumecca is an extremely powerful IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) used to treat pigmentation and vascular lesions. Lumecca uses photothermolysis, which means that specific light wavelengths target red and brown pigments in the skin. These red and brown pigments absorb the light, which then destroys them.
The main aim of Lumecca is to make the skin a more uniform colour. When people think about aging and sun-damaged skin, they often think about wrinkles. However, the colour of the skin plays a very important role in its appearance and it is amazing how great skin looks when it is an even tone. That’s why foundation was invented! But now we have a device that allows your skin to look great without make up.
Lumecca can be used all over the body, but the treatment is most commonly used on the face, neck, decolletage and hands.
Although IPL is not technically a laser as it uses multiple wavelengths (lasers use specific wavelengths), it is a power horse as it treats multiple skin concerns in one session. The small amount of heat emitted also stimulates collagen production so skin quality is generally improved.

What is Lumecca?
Lumecca is a machine-based treatment that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). IPL is based on the principle of photothermolysis where light is absorbed into the skin and selectively absorbed by chromophores (lesions that have a darker colour than their surrounding skin). In this way, we can selectively heat and destroy skin issues such as redness (rosacea), thread veins and pigmentation. The heat also stimulates collagen production so can improve skin texture and fine lines too.

Is there anyone that shouldn’t have Lumecca treatment?
Dr Hannah will assess your medical suitability. As a general guide, this treatment is not suitable for people who are pregnant or breast feeding, conditions affected by light (eg. photosensitivity, epilepsy).
It is only suitable for people with Fitzpatrick skin types I – IV.
What should be done to prepare for treatment?
Book a “Test Patch” at least 24 hours before your treatment (this can be booked online under the Lumecca tab).
Avoid all excessive UV exposure 3-4 weeks before treatment. Wear daily factor 50 sunscreen.
How many treatments are needed?
Most people will need an initial course of 3 treatments for pigmentation.
For rosacea and vascular lesions, 3-5 sessions may be required.
Treatments are scheduled every 3- 6 weeks apart
How long until I see results?
For pigmentation, there will be an initial darkening of lesions. The darker skin then flakes off after around 5-7 days, revealing lighter skin beneath.
For vascular lesions, occasionally these resolve immediately during treatment. However, they may darken and then improve/resolve after 2 weeks.
For redness, you should gradually see an improvement after the first session.
How about maintenance?
Most people will have a single treatment every 6 – 12 months to maintain results. It’s important to wear daily sunscreen long term to maximise results. We recommend Heliocare.
I only want to treat a few thread veins, do I need to treat the full face?
Some patient may wish to treat just a small patch of pigmentation or a few thread veins. However, we normally advise treating the whole face because it’s surprising how often people have solar damage in areas that they didn’t realise. Lumecca also stimulates collagen production so it’s a great regenerative treatment for the whole face.
